Heath Manufacturing, Co. originated in 1948 by the Heath Family to manufacture bird feeders for a local retailer. Over time, the company expanded its product offering to include various bird feeders, bird houses, suet cakes, lawn and garden products, planters and ancillary related products, including seed scoops, squirrel feeders, and baffles. In 1958, Heath began offering suet bird feed as an adjunct to its houses and feeders. Today, all suet related products are manufactured at the Coopersville Michigan location. In 2005, Heath Manufacturing, Co., acquired a full line of U.S. flags and accessories and began doing business as Heath Outdoor Products. This natural addition created a smooth blend in the Heath product line for a well-rounded offering of backyard products.

Livingston Seed Company was founded in 1850 by Alexander Livingston. Mr. Livingston is known for developing the first reliable tomato variety and cultivated a total of 31 varieties under the name “Buckeye Garden Seed Company”. The first of these was the Paragon, introduced all the way back in 1870. Under Livingston, the Buckeye Garden Seed Company was first to attempt seed hybridization of tomatoes. Alexander’s hard work fine-tuned the tomato into the fruit we know today.

The Olds' brand dates to 1888, when Levitt Lincoln Olds founded the L.L. Olds Seed Co. at Clinton, Wisconsin. Through the years, Olds became known for selling only the finest quality seed of better varieties, whether selling alfalfa and seed potatoes for Wisconsin farms or garden seed through a mail order catalog for 97 years. Today, Olds Garden Seed continues that tradition in its sales to independent garden retailers nationwide.

At the time, farmers in Virginia were unable to buy seed guaranteed to grow in the Commonwealth. Despite scientific findings of the correlation between the quality of seeds and the quality of crops they produced, commercial seed handlers continued to sell poor-quality seed. In 1923, about 150 farmers met in Richmond, Virginia, to take steps to remedy the situation. These 150 farmers, calling their cooperative Virginia Seed Service (VSS), found that pooling their resources enabled them to procure seeds better suited to Virginia's growing conditions. In the early 1930s, VSS looked beyond Virginia and changed its name to Southern States Cooperative. Southern States and ten other regional co-ops formed a national seed-breeding research organization, FFR. It remains the largest such operation anywhere in the world. Today, as one of the nation's largest farmer cooperatives, Southern States recognizes its past and looks forward to an exciting future.

Our history follows the history of America as it developed from a collection of rural villages where nearly everyone farmed at least a small plot of land through the industrial revolution and the growth of corporate America. True Temper was there every step of the way. When you work on something, you want to work hard and smart. Your tools need to do the same. Dirt, leaves, snow...whatever your job, True Temper makes the tool to handle it, the result of our unparalleled focus on quality and innovation. Choose True Temper, the strong and smart choice.

During the 1850s, the steel industry flourished throughout the United States, creating a high demand for ash timber, which is the wood used for tool handles because of its weight, strength, and size. A lot of steel goods companies opened in response to this demand. And after a century and a half of mergers and consolidation, the most enduring company, founded in Columbus, Ohio in 1890, has spawned--the company we know today as UnionTools. In 2006, UnionTools joined the Ames family of companies and continues to market quality tools.
